Bass Pro to close Cabela’s distribution centre in Sidney

Bass Pro Shops has announced the closure of the distribution centre at Cabela’s former headquarters in Sidney, Nebraska, with the loss of 121 jobs.

The Springfield, Missouri-based business, which took over its rival in a deal worth $5 billion in June 2017, has also axed the former Cabela’s returns centre in Oshkosh. A further 41 positions are affected.

In a statement, Bass Pro Shops said that the closures, due in the Spring of this year, come following a review of its distribution network in a bid to provide faster shipping on a par with the likes of Amazon. “This action is being taken as a result of an extensive review of all Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s operations, including independent analysis by global logistics experts and shipping companies,” it said.

“The effort supports the company’s ‘fast-and-free’ two-day shipping initiative, created to compete with major national e-commerce platforms, which offer two-day shipping. As part of this, roughly 97% of all eligible online orders at and will ship the same day a customer places an order, providing faster home delivery than ever before,” it added.

“The company greatly respects Cabela’s long-term ties to Sidney,” Bass Pro said. “Over the last year every effort has been made to maintain significant operations in the city and across Nebraska, while maintaining an obligation to customers and employees by continually assessing the business and implementing necessary actions to keep the organisation financially healthy and better serve our customers in a competitive marketplace.”

Cabela’s centres will still continue to serve customers from five existing distribution sites across the country by expanding operations to seven days a week and adding new jobs throughout the remainder of the network.
